Thoughts from the Road

Have you ever heard the sound of silence?
No cars driving in the distance or the scurrying of people starting their day...but absolute silence?

That is what the woods of San Isabel National Forest are like.
The morning of my last full day in Salida, I hiked the Colorado Trail in Mt. Princeton.
I picked an easy path that wound up around the back of the mountain at a steady incline.
When I stopped walking and the sound of my labored breathing and scuffling of running shoes against the terrain ceased, I stood still and listened.

And I heard...nothing.

Not a single person was within a half mile of me, nor were their any roads close.
Even the birds were quiet that morning.

The sound of silence in nature can make the sounds in your head so loud.
Almost ridiculous.

My cousin said to me, "It'll be good for you to come to the mountains. They are so big and it makes whatever problems you are facing seem so small."

The mountains do make me feel small.
Being that alone in nature almost makes me feel uncomfortable.
I'm not used to that amount of reduced distraction.

The day before, I did some hiking of the trails around Garden of the Gods.

I climbed up on some of the rocks and I had a stark realization.
No one knows where I am.

I didn't tell anyone the exact spot I was in. I didn't check in with anyone about my plans and where I was headed. I just did it.

Realizing how alone I actually was made me feel insignificant.
As if having a person makes my life matter any more than it did before?

I sat on top of that rock and used my camera to take a timed selfie.
Then I thought, I could fall off this rock and someone might not find my body for days.
No one knows I'm here.

Then I thought...

This is how people disappear.

I could get in a car and drive and drive and go wherever I want.
I could hide out in these mountains and spend days without speaking to another soul.
I could pack up my belongings and settle in a new place.
I could be a whole different person.

It's just me now.
I can do whatever I want to do.

This is simultaneously liberating and terrifying.
All my life I've had a plan. A final destination in mind.
I've strategically planned and plotted every step.
I've always known exactly what I wanted and when.

But now?

I'm just seeing where this road takes me.

Colorado Trip: Day 3

We had an early afternoon flight on Monday so we got up with the sun to check out the local trails.
Keith and Jamie's neighborhood has over 80 miles of trail. We got on the trail just a couple blocks from their house and climbed up the hill to look out of the neighborhood.

Watching the sun come up over the mountains and downtown Denver was just beautiful.

We took their dog with us and I got this shot of T walking with him. It might be one of my favorite pictures.

We were also able to get a picture of the Birdman's house. Do you know who that is?

It was so beautiful and peaceful walking along the trail with our coffee and the crisp morning air.
I could start every morning that way- waking up with the mountains and the sun.

I got this shot of the sun just peeking over the hill and it turned out perfect. :)

After our walk, we headed downtown to hang out while Keith went to some morning meetings.
Denver's capital building looks very similar to Des Moines.
We shopped in this little downtown mall area, then hit up the Yard House for some beers and appetizers.
They have a huge selection of draft beer and lots of local beer too. Keith met us for lunch, then we were off to airport to head back home.

We had a great time visiting our friends! T and Keith really enjoyed spending some time catching up. Best buddies.
I loved Denver and definitely want to go back- especially to do some more outdoorsy stuff- like some hiking. I was glad I crossed some items off my bucket list, visited some good friends and spent a memorable weekend celebrating 2 years with T. :)

Have you been to Colorado? What was your favorite part?

Colorado Trip: Day 2

On Sunday morning we woke up to clear and cool sunny skies in Colorado. T and I walked to Starbucks and then headed back to get ready because it was FOOTBALL SUNDAY!!

All the Bronco fans were waiting for the train that would take us all to the stadium.

There were hundreds of people streaming off the train to head into the stadium to see the Broncos take on the Chargers. Our friend Keith is a Chargers fan...so we just didn't dress affiliated with either team. :)

Then we found our section and headed in to the sounds of AC/DC blasting through the stadium....
THUNDER!!

Our seats were 50 yard line, 19th row. AMAZING.

This guy is not messing around. He was even in a little infomercial on the jumbo tron about 'Respect' for the game, the stadium and the fans.

Check out John Elway in the white!
The pre game stuff was quite the production. The cheerleaders put on a little show complete with skimpy outfits (I felt sorry for them it was COLD) and booty shaking. :)

I'm not sure what this ladies name is, but every time they score she rides across the field on her horse.

This was the craziest part of the whole thing. They had people skydive into the stadium!!

Can you see the guy landing in the middle with his Bronco colored parachute?

Then the team came running out across the field to get the game started!!

We also paid homage to our soldiers, veterans and all other Americans serving our country.

They had fighter jets fly across the field. I had never seen anything like it. So awesome!!

I had to get this picture taken for my Life List. :)

Then the game was on!! It was so exciting! I love football, but seeing it live is even better. We were sitting in a season ticket section so all the people around us were serious fans.

Jamie and I got our picture taken with this guy with an outfit made entirely out of pom poms!!

At first, the Chargers were killing it, then TEBOW came in to try and bring them back!!

There he is with his boyish good looks.... HA

The last few minutes of the game were so intense!! It was really close, but the Chargers pulled out a victory!

Then we stood in the biggest people pile up ever to wait for the train.
But it moved pretty fast. And I got a pretty good picture of downtown.

We had a great day!! And I was so excited to see my first NFL game. :)
