Anticipation and Expectation

I spent the two days before Christmas enjoying all the fun the season has to offer. T and I went on our annual Christmas tree lights drive. I baked and cooked and watched Christmas movies. I wrote cards and leisurely planned my days.

As a kid, I loved Christmas Eve too.

There is something so magical about the night before Christmas. The expectation and anticipation.
It is also sort of sad to me too. When the night was over, it was Christmas and that was the last of the ‘fun’ days of winter break. Life just went back to normal.

I never wanted the night to end. I remember wanting to sleep so I could wake up for the gifts and family time, but also wanting to stay awake and not let the night end. I remember watching the glow of the Christmas lights on our house through my window and trying to stay awake.

I think about that now. How I often live in excitement and expectation of things to come. How sometimes I don’t want for that time to end because I’m afraid it will just be all back to normal…the magic of the upcoming holiday gone already forgotten.

My hope is that expectation begins to live in my heart all year long- that I can live in positive and happy anticipation, readying myself for the next stages of life.

Christmas is meant to be a time of remembrance and excitement leading up to the birth of Jesus. But it’s not over then.

Jesus is coming back. We should always be living in the expectation of Him returning. I want the excitement, joy and longing to last well beyond one night.

It’s funny how the day after Christmas things can seem so mundane and without light. There is all the built up joy of the lights and the shopping and the baking and the family and the rushing around for it to all culminate into a few hours of celebration and then it’s done. The next day you are left feeling void and sort of hopeless.

But that’s not the truth is it?

Jesus birth was on Christmas but then he was WITH US. He grew into a boy and a man who eventually died on the cross for you and me. Each day after his birth was a day of hope and renewal. Each day beyond that baby boy was one of everlasting peace.

I think it’s so easy to fall back into the trap of the day after Christmas blues. Back to alarms. Back to work. Back to emails. Meetings. Bills. Cleaning.

I was surprised at how easily I slipped back into being the same unfulfilled self. How quickly I was able to forget the joy that is Christmas.

What if I lived with that joy in my heart all year? What if I continued to remember the magic of what Jesus birth means? What if everyday I focused my heart on Him?

Emmanuel.

God With Us.

Jesus With Us.

Just because December 25th passed by doesn’t mean Jesus left too.

He’s here every day in the alarms, the work, the emails, the meetings, the bills and the cleanings. He’s in the cold winter morning runs. He’s in the cloudy snowy skies. He’s in the seemingly endless waiting for this that and the other to change or ‘go our way.’ He’s in the family discord and the family love. He’s there for all of it. He’s right beside us. Holding us up. Cheering us on.

Leading us to Him.

So now that the presents are unwrapped and the food is eaten and we are all feeling a little ‘over’ the holiday, let’s continue to live in good anticipation and longing for Jesus.

Emmanuel.

He is With us.

We had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. I love spending time with family- laughing, cooking, eating, baking, playing games and giving gifts. I love taking time to think over what this holiday is all about. We read Luke 2 numerous times in our Advent reading plan and during the church sermons. One verse really stuck out to me:

"But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart." Luke 2:19

This excerpt came from my journal on Christmas:

This verse makes me think about what God has in store for us in 2013. In this part of the story, Mary is hearing all the good news her new baby boy is bringing- the proclamation of his amazing future. I think about the blessings just starting in my life and what the future holds for me...if these blessings are just a glimpse into an amazing life in store for me. Thank you baby Jesus for all you've given me. I'm taking these blessings and pondering them in my heart.

Happy Birthday Jesus.

Christmas in Iowa

I love Christmas.

Twinkle lights, pine smells, presents, the time of the year when the world falls in love.

It really is the most wonderful time of the year.

This year was extra special because this is the first year T and I were able to spend the entire Christmas together. The past two years he either just got into town on Christmas or was flying out on Christmas to see his family on the east coast.
It was a nice change to spend Christmas Eve AND Christmas together.

We laughed at this setup. Would make a hilarious Christmas card. T was going for the 'serious' look.

To do something a little different this year, I did 12 days of Christmas gifts for T.

1 Christmas Ornament
2 Movie Tickets
3 Smooching pictures
4 packs of Starbursts
5 hours of energy
6 pack of beer
7 memories
8 socks
9 cans of FRS

10 Christmas Songs
11 Chocolate bells
12 pictures of us

It was fun coming up with 12 things and I think T enjoyed getting little goodies everyday.

I had Thursday and Friday before Christmas off so I spent time baking, cooking, wrapping gifts and making little crafty munchies for Christmas with my dad's family.

It was so nice and relaxing. I even had time to get a few nice runs in the unseasonably warm weather.

On Friday night, we went to Christmas at my Dad's house.
My grandma got T some much needed kitchen items...and embarassed him a little when she had everyone watch him open. :)

The kids had fun opening their gifts.

And I finished Lucy's hat!! She looks so stinking cute in it.

I got the girls Just Dance 3 for the Wii. They had fun playing and even Lucy got in on the dancing action.

It was fun to spend time with family and see all the kids. They are getting so big!!

On Christmas Eve, T and I had plans together.
First, we got dressed up and headed out to church.

The kids sang some Christmas carols. So cute.

Then T cooked some amazing dinner and we watched a little football.

I even made a little apple crisp for dessert! It was a recipe from Martha Stewart.

After dinner, we got into our PJs and rode around to look at Christmas lights.

T got me these new J Crew PJ pants for Christmas

Don't you love his Sam Adams hat?
After lights, we came home, curled up on the couch and dozed while watching Elf.
It was the best.

Christmas morning we got up to open presents. And my camera quit working. :( But I did get a couple with my phone.

Roxy enjoyed her treats from Santa!!

T loved all his presents- especially his Ipod speaker. And I'm a horrible girlfriend because I was just excited to watch him open and didn't take any pictures. :(

T bought me all kinds of amazing stuff- including an Ipad!!

I was literally speechless.

I have been all geeked out on it this week- it's so much fun!!

After opening gifts, we got cleaned up a little and went to my sister's house for PJ Christmas Brunch!

The food was tasty and it was nice to hang out and watch Christmas movies while munching.

Lucy enjoyed hanging out in her PJs and playing with all her gifts from Santa too.
Finally in the afternoon, Lucy got a bath and got all pretty for Christmas with my bro-in-law's family.

Isn't she so stinking cute?!?!! I just want to squeeze her! and I do- quite often. :)

I also got showered because T and I were going to go out.

But then everywhere was closed so we stayed in and watched football and went to bed early.
It was perfect. :)

It was one of the best weekends with the best people.
I feel so blessed to have such wonderful people in my life and to be able to spend all of Christmas weekend with my most favorite person.
