The Birthday Blog- 31

I took another trip round the sun.

Last week, I turned 31. Everyone says the 30s are the best years of your life. For me, it has been the biggest growing year of my life- spiritually, emotionally and professionally. I feel like I’m learning so much about who I am, what I can handle and what I want for my life. It’s been fun and hard work. It’s been happy and sad. It’s been amazing and disappointing. It’s definitely been a year of extremes and I’m happy for a fresh start as I move officially into my 30s.

I always like to reflect when it’s my birthday. What did the past year entail? What was good? What was not so good? What did circumstances and experiences teach me about life, love and God? How did I change? How did I grow?

Those are all still questions I’m answering and mulling over and writing about in my journal. I started this blog 3 years ago on my birthday. I’ve shared about so many good times had and also about one of the hardest seasons of my life.

Not surprising, I learned more about myself in the hard times than the good.

I learned that I am resilient. I can be strong and forgiving. I also learned that I can be weak. I can be mean and bitter. I learned that being the latter does no good for anyone…especially me. I learned that no matter what happens to me, I’m never alone in this world. God is always guiding me. My family and friends are just a phone call away. I learned the power of prayer is undeniable. I learned having a community of people lifting you up in prayer during a hard time can be the most remarkable thing. I learned life can get messed up and broken but restoration and forgiveness are beautiful things.

I definitely don’t have it all figured out, and I know that I never will. But seeing glimpses of renewal in the everyday experiences give me hope for the future:

I spent time in El Salvador meeting some of the most incredible people who materially have so little but spiritually are overflowing. I spent a week laughing harder than I had in so long. I made friends for life.
Travel Outside the Country
60. Go on a missions trip

I spent a weekend in the nation’s capital walking the grounds where so many of our country’s leaders have spent time. I spent a rainy day remembering the Holocaust and feeling very thankful to live in a free country.  I walked all over downtown Washington DC and then I ran my fastest race to date along the Potomac River.
See the cherry blossoms on the mall in DC (and run a race there!)

I made a last minute hair appointment and decided it was time for a change.
26. Grow my hair really long then cut it off for Locks of Love

I also: moved, changed jobs, started a business and ran another marathon. I got rid of half my clothes, lost 10 inches of hair and gained 10 lbs of winter. :)

The day before my birthday, a co-worker from the tax office passed away. He had been battling cancer and heart issues for some time. He would read this blog and send me an email or post on Facebook.
About a month before he died, he sent me an email to tell me he was in a rehab center and his cancer was going to take him ‘sometime this year.’ He said he always enjoyed me at the tax office and he hopes that I ‘have a great life and marry that guy you like.’

It was a goodbye email.

After a couple days of mulling over a response, I told him that I hope he lives for many more years, but if he doesn’t, that he enjoys every minute and I was so happy he was at peace. He responded with this:

I have really enjoyed your writing. I think you should pursue writing a book our something it would be enjoyable. I have always thought that you were really smart and have always hope that you could fulfill all those dreams you have "coffee shop, writer, etc"…. No one knows when one will go, that's in God's hands. I have had a good life with nothing to complain about. I wish you the very best and really hope you find all the happiness you are looking for.

I met Steve’s wife, Diane, just a couple days ago at his visitation here in Des Moines (he was living in Chicago near his kids when he passed). I introduced myself and she shook both of my hands and said ‘Oh I’ve heard so much about you.’ She told us Steve was a great husband, father and grandfather. That he lived a full life and he was ready when his time came.

I saved Steve’s final email.  I read it often. It is a constant reminder to me that we only get one shot at this life and we MUST make the best of it. And leave the rest to God.

This past year held so many experiences. Some I’ll never forget and some I wish were different. But honestly, I wouldn’t trade a second of it. God has such an amazing plan for me. I can feel it in my bones. I’m going to live life with no regrets. The one I imagined I would have. All the while, I will seek His face every step of the way.

Steve , just like I promised you in my email- I WILL write that book and I WILL make sure you are in it.
This post is for you.

MAY!!

I felt like this month's recap needed a big title because it was so crazy and busy and fun and beautiful and life-changing....but I couldn't think of anything creative.
So I just went ALL CAPS.
So you know I'm serious.

- Spend time in the word and prayer more.
I kept up with #shereadstruth in May, but I definitely missed a lot of church and small group due to all the out of town trips and races. And also just being exhausted from said trips and races. I realized how important that community is to my spirit. I need to be around people who share my beliefs and remind me of the life I'm called to live- one of service and love to Jesus and my fellow people.

- Stop Overcommitting
I ordered a sweet new planner that I'm absolutely in love with. It feels good to get my calendar back in order. I'm working on being more intentional with my time, but May was NOT the month for that. There was SO MUCH crammed into a short time that I feel like I barely remember it all. Not exactly how I want my summer to go. I'm looking forward to hazy Sunday afternoon bike rides, afternoons at the beach and lots of time relishing in the sunshine with family and friends.

- Get Simple (Fashion & Spending Fast)
Even though I purchased a few things on my out of town trips, I'm going to give this goal a thumbs up. I had planned for spending money in Cincinatti and Colorado so I didn't charge a bunch of stuff. I bought 3 running items at the expo in Cinci which I traded out for old items. In CO, I bought a few brewery t-shirts- which were also exchanged in the rotation with some old concert t's. Normally on an out of town trip, I would hit up an outlet and blow too much money. I tried to be intentional about spending and even ate up all my groceries before going out of town so I wouldn't waste food. I'm not 100% on this goal yet, but I'm definitely on my way.

- Eat (mostly) vegan
The first half of the month was not that great. And I felt it. I was lethargic, tired, puffy and just blah. Before we went to CO, I ate so many dang veggies and decided to start tracking my food again to get back on track. I'm happy to say that by the end of the month, I was back to eating really good whole foods, including green juice daily.

- Give priorities priority (more family, regular volunteering, scheduled writing sessions)
I was out of town a lot in May. But when I was here, I got to spend a ton of time with my family and friends. I wasn't able to volunteer as much as I liked, but it was a busy month. I am trying to have one night a week where I spend doing blog things, but other than that- I'm writing a little every day. But as you can tell from the lack of blog posts...writing here hasn't been happening as much.

-Rest in the big picture.
I spent a LOT of time in May thinking about the big picture. And where I want my life to go. If you missed any of those philosophical ramblings...check them out here and here.

My only goal for May was to ENJOY.
I ran 3 races ( A PR AND a 2nd place group finish!) and took 2 out of town trips...one that brought me back another year older.
It was one heck of a month and I relished every. single. minute. of it.
Even though I SAID I wasn't going to hold myself to many goals...that's just not possible. ACHIEVER is number 3 on my strengthfinders people. It's like a genetic trait, I can't avoid it.

And with birthdays, I always take stock on where my life is headed. And this milestone birthday? Yeah it was definitely one that made me rethink my assumptions about the rules are about work and life. And guess what?

There aren't any.

Seize the day!

Here's a little bit of my May in pictures. Enjoy!

Remember when it snowed in May? yeah I sort of forgot too.

I spent the night in the Chicago airport. That was fun.

I got to hang out with my friend Kimberly in Cinci!

Where I ran my fastest 1/2 marathon yet!

We had so much fun running the Flying Pig.

Plus the metals are pretty cool.

I ran my first relay race with my running buddies!
And...we won 2nd place in our division!! It was awesome.

And right after the race- my family and friends surprised me with a 30th birthday party...complete with all my favorite candy from my childhood days. Candy cigs & Zotz!

My mom made this amazing montage of pictures from the last 30 years and stuff that came out the year I was born: Hooters and Reading Rainbow....Hmmm.

I got to celebrate my 30th birthday in the biggest way- seeing my favorite band at Red Rocks with my favorite guy and his brother (from another mother)!

We went on a bike and beer tour

Colorado has awesome craft brews!

Also- the mountains. So dang pretty.

My first MLB game! Go Rockies!

Did I mention the mountains?

Running with the other Nicole in the highest elevation municipality in the US!

Sunshine. And mountains. No filter here.

And MOUNTAINS. Sky for days. It was really just beautiful the entire time.

Then we came back to reality. And this girl was happy.

And I was happy to get this too. Nice kick off to 30.

I did a 20 days of 20 minutes of yoga challenge. It was so good.

And I got back to my beloved farmers market. Yaaa for local foods!

And of course, shenanigans with this guy always.
Man, that was maybe my favorite month of all time.
Except maybe that one epic weekend...It's a toss up.

This is a good life. :)

What have you been up to??

#30years

I wrote this the other night in about 5 minutes. It just came pouring out of me. I have so many thoughts and dreams about what the next phase of my life holds.

This is just the beginning.

I can send out a tweet. Or a facebook status update. Or an instagram. Someone might like it or retweet it or whatever, but will anyone remember what I said? 100 years from now, will that profound tweet be making any kind of difference in the world? I’m not sure that anyone will remember what I said an hour from now.
I’m starting to think some of the though-provoking questions and conclusions I've made about life and love and all manner of soul-searching would be better suited to something more permanent.

Tangible.

I don’t want to be forgotten amidst the chatter of meaningless words and phrases floating around the interwebs.

100 years from now, I want people to remember me as someone who had something important to say and it mattered.

I think about that guy, Bret. He lives a small quiet life in Wisconsin and no one would ever think twice looking at him about what resolve and determination he has. About what he has overcome and what his entire life can teach us about humanity and spirit and love.

There’s a line in this One Republic song: ‘I hope you spend your days and they all add up.’

I want my days to add up.

I don’t want to waste one second of this precious gift not being me.

I want to leave behind a legacy of LOVE and LIFE.

I have this feeling inside me…like maybe I was put here for something great. That when I spend my days at a job I don’t love, as a number no one will remember….I’m wasting this gift. That my days don’t add up.
Some days it physically hurts my heart to be there knowing that I’m not DOING anything. I’m not making an imprint on the world. My heart and talents could be better served elsewhere. I get choked up some days thinking about how I have so much to give and time is just ticking by.

I don’t know what this means for the next decade.

I don’t know how I’ll end up.

But I can feel it in my soul.

The stirrings of something BIG.

I DO know I’m not wasting any more time.

I do know that when I turn 40, I can look back on the past 10 years and be proud of the ‘editing’ I did. I can reflect on the chipping away at the pieces that don’t belong. The way I allowed the best parts of me to emerge and grow and share with others. I can look back on that time spent in laughter and love with the people that really matter. I can tangibly hold in my hand words I’ve written, things I’ve made, pictures I’ve taken- all showcasing the best parts of this one incredibly imperfect life.

At 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100….I can say ‘I lived.’

A Year in Review: 2012 Special Events

We had some great times this year!!

In the spring, we celebrated our birthdays:

T's Birthday was Thai Food and a new bike!
I loved surprising T with his bike and we discovered a new favorite Thai place- Taste of Thai in the East Village. Best coconut curry I've ever had. Aghhhh! Just thinking about it makes me want to order take out.

My Birthday with sis and niece and Mexican with T!
I had a perfect day off of work just bumming around downtown with my sister and niece Lucy and we tried out a local town favorite Mexican restaurant- El Patio.

Both days were just perfect.

I love celebrating our birthdays together. I know it's easy as you get older to say 'It's just another day' but I think it's important to tell the person you love that 'Hey! I'm so glad you were born!' :)

This summer we also attended the Des Moines Art Festival. It's a pretty big deal here- artists apply to be in it and are chosen by a board of locals. It's free to the public and also has music, beer tents, kid crafts, etc. We went on Friday night to hear the bands, then we volunteered on Saturday (a little girl gave T her necklace- it says 'I want to be a unicorn that never dies'- needless to say, we saved it) and Sunday we went to the afternoon matinee to see Seeking a Best Friend For the End of the World. It was just a great summer weekend.

There were also a couple of BIG things that happened in 2012 and they both just happened to occur in the same weekend. :)

We drove up to Minneapolis on Saturday morning

Ate some delicious lunch

Drove the beautiful race route

Checked out the expo

Ate a big old dinner of pre race eats: veggie burger, fries and veggie chili. I highly recommend The Local.

Then off to bed for RACE DAY!!

It was a COLD start, but I was feeling good. Even had time to stop for a little snack mid-way through.

I don't know what to say about the race itself, it went by so fast...HA! It was a gorgeous course and I felt so great. I ran sans music just so I could soak it all in. I loved every minute of it.
The last few miles I started to get a little tired and knew I needed a boost so I put on my headphones and my special 'Marathon Power Hour' play list:

When I crossed the finish line, I think I was somewhere in between Katy Perry and Britney Spears. :)

To say I was emotional was an understatement, I ran across the finish line, spotted T behind the fence on the side and half hobbled, half ran to him and cried over the fence while he snapped my picture. I had hoped to finish in 4:30. My official finish time was 4:15:04!! I was super happy about finishing upright AND getting a great time!

Once we were able to make it to the car (I had some issues walking...) and I got showered, we went to The Blue Door Pub and stuffed our faces with delicious Juicy Lucys.

Then I got a tattoo to celebrate my first marathon!! (That's a 26.2 in roman numerals)

THEN...(this was a pretty fun-filled day)...we went back to The Local to enjoy some afternoon cocktails and watch baseball.

We had planned on a fancy dinner since our 3 year anniversary was the next day, but we were so full from Juicy Lucys we decided to skip it. Instead, we headed back to the hotel room to get into our 'evening' attire anyway.

But right before I was able to get my clothes changed, my whole world changed.

THIS!

T asked me if I would be his wife.
To which I replied, 'Of course!!'

It was a PERFECT day.
I feel so incredibly blessed to have T in my life and I cannot wait to be his wife.

We spent the next morning enjoying a little anniversary/post marathon/engagement celebration brunch at The Birchwood Cafe. It might be one of my favorite places ever.

The food was great, but the company?

Even. better.

Did you get engaged this year? Run a marathon?
Not trying to brag, but just saying... best. weekend. ever.
